Statement for World Day for Health and Safety at Work

Kingston, April 28 (JCSA):

This year’s World Health and Safety Day comes in the wake of one of the world’s greatest health crises. The theme “Stop the Pandemic” focuses on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, in particular, on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now more than ever there is an immense focus on the health and safety of workers across the world. Especially those who are on the front lines.

Governments, employers and workers are faced with the challenge of combating this unseen monster. The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus has resulted in the lockdown of specific communities in Jamaica in an effort to prevent further community spread of Covid-19.
Despite this the number of confirmed cases are steadily increasing. This poses a threat for workers who must go out on a daily basis. Many of which have to travel on public passenger vehicles to get to work and interface with persons in the public.

Our front line workers who must face this pandemic head on and persons who risk their lives on a daily basis by going out to work is of great concern. The Jamaica Civil Service Association is invested in the protection of workers rights. As, such we want to stress the importance of safeguarding the health and safety of workers across Jamaica.

Today, we join with other unions across Jamaica and around the world to raise awareness of safe health practices in the workplace and the value of policies for occupational health and safety at work.
